Who: Zero, X, Jake Berenson, Kazuma Yagami, and Mari Broderick

What: Mari teleports her two new allies to meet up with two close friends to share and verify their ideas for putting a stop to a demi-god version of the Joker

When: After this scene here

Where: Kazuma Yagami's Earth Dimension, somewhere in Japan

"Here we are," Mari announced as they arrived on the suburban street where Jake and her stayed at the house Kazuma had paid for. She turned to where the wrecked car and broken sidewalk were. She frowned at the mess she had made when she fought that endurable version of what could be a copycat of the Joker. He used the same weapons and looked about the same as what she recognized most from the comics, and Batman: The Animated Series.

"Hopefully the car owner got my anonymous apology letter by now." Normally, she didn't get this angry at someone. She also didn't often meet anyone that had an unlimited amount of invincibility who couldn't stay down when thrown around or punched really, really hard.

"This way." She sighed and turned back around, up the steps of the little porch, and opened the front door.

X is from his own world's Japan, originally, and so feels a little more at home than Zero. Both, however, quickly survey the damage to get more of an idea what they're up against. Then they'll follow Mari inside.

The crumpled rear and and two missing doors from one side of that car was her doing, out of anger after that invincible spin-off of the Joker had tried to shoot Jake out of the sky. A bird of prey, like a person, wouldn’t survive against his toxic laughing gas.

After she opened the front door, it was Kazuma who came over, a Japanese man in his 20’s. He looked past her to X and Zero. “They don’t look like they came out of a video game.” He shrugged. “Then again, I wouldn’t know. I never took interest in them.”

He looked back to Mari as she briefly explained. “They chose alternate forms, without their armor to blend in with everyone else.”

Kazuma replied with a nod. That was all he needed to know.

“Ekkusu, Zero, this is one of my friends; Kazuma Yagami. He’s a modern day wind mage...” Kazuma noticed her looking around in confusion. “Where’s Jake?”

“He’ll be down in a minute. He’s upstairs, changing back to his human self.”

That gets a snerk out of Zero. "'Alternate forms' make us sound like Axl or Lumine. We're not shapeshifters," he says, partly to clarify for Kazuma. "Getting rid of armor isn't that much different than changing clothes, except it gets shoved into data storage."

"It's nice to meet you," X says, being the one of the two actually raised with more attention to manners. "I hope we'll be able to help with the current problem."

"Some of our internal self-repair involves nanotech," X says. "In fact, the medical kit I brought with me has nanite boosters in case either of us are injured, as well as supplies for organics. But that's about it's limit. Weapons and armor make use of data storage..."

"Think of it like Cartoon Hammerspace," Zero interrupts before X can get too technical. "It's easier that way."

X is used to this, and just nods. "Some copy weapons, particularly energy-based ones, would require us to have or armor on to make use of buster systems. But many of the thrown ones won't have that limitation."

"Neither does this," Zero says, holding up a metal cylinder that - should any of them have seen Star Wars - will probably be very reminiscent of a deactivated lightsaber hilt.

Jake had finished changing into his casual clothes. Morphing in loose fitting clothing never worked. Skin-tight outfits were the way to go.

He was already coming down the stairs when he saw the two new allies.

Was the one guy holding a light saber? I thought they were from Megaman Earth, Jake thought in slight confusion. Unless one of them is also a Jedi. I wouldn’t doubt that...

“That sounds really neat,” Mari said, smiling to X and Zero. “Nanite boosters... I heal sort of quickly, but this is still good info to know.”

"We heal a bit faster than humans without them," X says, "but not quite enough to make a difference in combat."

"Most of X's alts I've heard about weren't medics," Zero says, "but for us... it's part of what makes us a good team when crap hits the fan. He does all the Lightbot rescuing of anyone that needs it, and I scrap anything that gets in the way."

The reactions of X and Zero are quite different at this. X closes his eyes a moment in mourning for people he's never even met. Though he's seen a lot of death as a field medic, and in a few cases hasn't been innocent of causing it, it's always a cause of sadness for him.

Zero's expression just gets colder, as if anything he feels about it is shuttered away behind doors in order to get down to business. "Then let's get a plan together to keep this guy from adding any more to the body count."

Kazuma watched Mari place her hand on Ekkusu’s shoulder in comfort as she frowned at him for a moment. Jake, Mari, and Kazuma empathized with them both.

Back in their home town, a memorial was recently put together by the sentience of the world herself for the numbers of people who lost both their lives and humanity.

He looked between her, Zero, and Ekkusu. “I know the last text Mari sent me mentioned about a strategy you guys talked about.”

“Yeah,” she confirmed, her expression serious and determined. “The three of us already agreed to draw him out into a more open space, where it’s less crowded with people. Zero and I will be the muscle against him while we disarm him of bomb triggers and weapons.”

Jake nodded, for he seemed think this may just work. “I could morph again, and search the city. He might be there, if not around here.”

“Alright,” Kazuma replied, “but you should fly as high as you can. That way, it will be easier for you to dodge bullets.” He looked to X. “Since you’re going to help evacuate any civilians nearby, I’ll provide you some cover.” He opened his palm as a tiny tornado formed on top of it. “Deflecting bullets and anything so no one gets hurt won’t be a problem.”

Zero nods. "No matter how tough this guy is, I doubt he's immortal. ... And if he is, we'll just have to see how he likes spending eternity in several pieces."

X nods. "Zero and I both have weapons that can stop time for a very short time, which should help with evacuations and removing detonators and weapons from this person. I also have some shield weapons that can be used, though the diameter of the area they can cover is limited."

"Kaz and I could distract him," Mari offered. Her expression switched to a mildly irritated expression. "Apparently he put a lot of attention into fighting me, and then promising that we'd meet again."

Jake was already bracing himself for what he had to do. He pulled off his t-shirt, revealing the tighter shirt underneath. "Might as well start the search for him."

Kazuma went toward the front door to open it. "We'd better start heading over to the city. If he's not anywhere in the neighborhood, then there's a good chance he'd be lurking around there."

"Everything reminds you of one of your brothers, Zero..."

"Hell, X, I've got a small army of siblings... But in this case, I was thinking of Forte and his old obsession with your little big bro."

X seems more aware of that topic having caused uncomfortable thoughts than his friend is, looking a slight bit embarrassed. "Sorry... Most where we're from, well... Zero's known for having all the tact of a particularly tactless brick."

Zero just snerks at X's comment, used to a bit of teasing from his friend, but is back to all business at mention of Vertigo. he nods "The big reason to keep this as quiet as possible."

Jake didn't disagree to that as he finished removing his socks and jeans. He was now only in his morphing outfit; bike shorts and a tight fitting t-shirt.

"I'll put those in the house. Be right back." Mari picked up Jake's casual clothes, and advised to their new friends, "He's about to change forms. It'll be done in moments."

"The transformation is disturbing to see, from human to bird of prey," Jake warned, giving them an opening to look away before he'd start visualizing the peregrine form in his mind--as he had done hundreds of times before.

X had avoided looking right at Jake from when Jake had started removing clothing.

Zero doesn't think there's much that can disturb a Wilybot, and curiosity trumps looking away. Besides, if a situation came up where the guy might have to shapeshift in combat, he'd rather see what it looked like now than have it be any kind of distraction later.

Zero doesn't show any reaction of disgust to the change, just a raised eyebrow. "Huh, not exactly like Axl or Lumine..."

X, though, pays more attention to the rest. "Most telepaths we've encountered can't communicate with our kind," he says. "There's one species we know of that's an exception... Pernese fire lizards. It's a good thing we're both bonded, we might have to call our fire lizards in to act as a message relay."

Zero nods. "We'll want them to hang back, though, or fly high. I don't like the thought of Emerald getting into some kind of toxin."

“You might not have to. Mari and I could tell him what he says,” Kazuma suggested.

“Even during combat,” Mari added. “We won’t want any Japanese authorities coming over if Joker shoots laughing gas in the sky.” She tensed a bit.

< He’ll have more to fight on the ground. I’ll be too high above for the bastard to get a really good shot anyway, > Jake said.

There wasn’t a need to relay that message as the soft eerie sounds of morphing had ceased. In turning around, he saw the guy as a falcon now, looking up at him.

“As far as I know, for most of us, thought-speech works like e-mail,” Mari said. “He could talk to either of us, or both of us... Jake, you’d better get flyin’.”

Kazuma agreed, since the time limit clock was already ticking. In using his magic, he manipulated the wind to bring a steady and warm breeze towards everyone.

"Less of a message delay with the lizards, but it's your call," Zero says.

"We've never managed to determine exactly how fire lizards manage to avoid the usual problems organic telepaths have with AI," X says, "though it might have to do with the bonds they form at hatching."

"However they do it, if we end up needing anything more in terms of small supplies during the fight, they can pop in, make a drop, and pop back out," Zero says. "It was invaluable during the Ragnarok war, when our usual teleportation methods were blocked."

"Is teleportation fast enough?" Zero jokes, and hold out his wrist like a falconer would.

X makes the same motion as he says, "They evolved to avoid some kind of deadly falling space spores that were at least as fast as a bullet."

A pair of popping sounds, caused by air displacement, announce the arrival of two Pernese fire lizards. Both have green suede-like hides and faceted eyes. They land on Zero and X.

“Cool... They look kind of cute too,” Mari said.

As Jake rode the warm pillar of air higher up, he could still hear them as clearly as he was on the ground. Their world must have been a really dangerous environment, he pondered to himself as he looked down at the small dragons.

He decided to test his telepathic communication on them now, but also included everyone else as he told them, < I’ll do my best to stay within their range. Around my friends who had the same powers as me—if any of us were too far away from each other, then we’d be only to hear every other word or so. >

Inwardly, Jake felt a low wave of sadness come over him after mentioning the rest of the Animorphs. Falcons of course couldn’t express sadness or any human emotion, but he wouldn’t put it past Mari to pick up the subtlety behind why he didn’t say anything the next moment. Usually, he preferred to not say much about his friends, or anything else in relation to his world.

“We should start our search,” suggested Kazuma.

“Should we all go together, or split up once we enter the city?” Mari asked. “Kazuma, your family has fire magic, right? Do you think there’s a good chance for the Joker to see them?”

Jake noticed Kazuma frowning. “Ayano in particular can take him on, but she sometimes lacks in self control. Ren isn’t quite as strong as she is, but I’m not worried for him. He’ll bail if Joker proves to be too much for him.”

Uh oh, she said the 'c word'. Both fire lizards promptly give Mari a look and a few birdlike chirps as they consider whether they can solicit scritches.

Zero snerks, and taps his Emerald lightly between her wings. "Later. We're on duty."

Both greens look up at the message, relaying it easily... the reply, however, might be strange. Since the two androids aren't telepathic on their own, the lizards have to compose messages for them, and fire lizards naturally think in images and emotions. Jake might receive something more like a passing memory of something seen than a visual hallucination... Zero on Earth, X on Mars... out of context, but the recognition of the areas attached to the thought. And that wasn't too far for the lizards. No worries about getting out of range.

"Splitting up would let us cover more ground to find this guy," Zero says.

"But at the same time... it would leave whoever finds him first vulnerable," X says. "We should make sure we can regroup quickly as soon as he is found."

That could be because Zero is Zero's actual name. And Ekkusu is just a Japanese pronunciation of X that his friend sometimes uses to avoid the explanation of being named after a variable.

Kazuma indicated northwest as they entered the city together. He was familiar with this city the most, so it was only reasonable that he took charge. "Zero, we'll start from this block." He glanced to Mari and Ekkusu. "You guys should search from the opposite side."

"All right," Mari said. "So, if we see any police tape, or wreckage, then maybe we'll have a trail to follow."

< I'll do an aerial sweep of this area. I'll let you know if I see anything, > Jake informed. Kazuma glanced up to notice the silhouette of the guy as a falcon who must have informed everyone, soaring above and passing them by.

"You should soar higher," Mari was firm to suggest. "Joker has gotten a good look of your morph last time. Don't give him an easy target." She looked ahead and started to move around one of the tall business buildings. "Let's do this. C'mon Ekkusu."

Kazuma proceeded to lead Zero towards the other side of the building.

X nods as they continue to search. "There was a time during the war when we used part of the Nexus for a refugee camp. The people were safer there."
Zero, when hunting, sometimes reminds others of a cat. He's quiet, and looks human, but there's something of a noticeable predatory nature about him. He tilts his head only briefly at the relayed message through the fire lizards.

Both green miniature dragons flying near Jake chirp to let him know the reploids they're bonded to have received the message. Their own eyesight isn't like a hawk's, but it is highly adapted to spotting signs of movement... whether that be falling Thread on Pern, or people below on the ground.

Jake knew that the dragons and himself were too high up to be noticed by anyone else that lived in this city. He had lived in the suburbs near a city himself to know that many who lived in them wouldn’t exactly take interest in bird watching. Yeah, they would be all right...

He’d never complain in being the only guy to have super vision. At least he didn’t have to be the leader, like he had little choice to be in his world—but he wouldn’t let himself think further than that. No, he wasn’t going to let himself be distracted with any thoughts or memories of home.

Jake didn’t want Mari to be overprotective of him. It wouldn’t be right or healthy for her to stress any further than she had already. He was determined to prove how capable and responsible he’d be as an adult to watch his own back.

When X said war, Mari tried not to frown or recall how horrible and nightmarish it was, in another war against the very nasty and very violent cyborg drones. “That was very fortunate of that world to offer it. I’m sure that must have helped a whole lot... Mostly, on my own end with my assorted family, we weren’t that lucky. And there were many casualties.” Too many lost their humanity.

“Towards the end, things got way out of hand. And there’s no way a scenario like that’s going to happen again, now that compromises have been made. I’m the main guardian and representative for the other Nexus, keeper of her life source.” Mari felt confident and determined as she stated this, while her home’s sentience silently agreed.

If it weren't for the occasional gentle reminders from the reploids they're bonded to, the flighty little greens would be at risk of forgetting why they're up here at all.

X thinks about that... the Nexus was a strange place. "It was never really offered so much as not objected to. That Nexus doesn't really have any kind of rules or government, except for two things I know of... there's one area where it's expected to ask a question. And attacking others there isn't allowed... to the point of weird things happening to those who try it."

He nods, sadly, at the mention of casualties. "My own family was very lucky, as was Zero's... but after what Weil caused... the entire human population of Earth fits into one city..."
